A native of St. Paul Minnesota, soprano Sara Gartland earned raves as Lisa in Des Moines Metro Opera’s production of Queen of Spades. James Sohre with Opera Today exclaimed, “DMMO has hitched its wagon to the sublime talents of soprano Sara Gartland . . . Ms. Gartland proved once again to be a perfect fit for the role at hand, the torn, lovelorn, and fatally frustrated Lisa. Her radiant, full-bodied soprano was made for the passionate outbursts required by the tortured heroine, and she gave such consistent pleasure that one only wished Tchaikovsky had given her more to sing."

Ms. Gartland’s busy 2022-2023 season includes her role debut as Nedda in I Pagliacci with Opera San Antonio, her Opera Colorado debut as Marie/Marietta in Die Tote Stadt, her Dallas Opera debut as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, and her Minnesota Opera debut as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni.

A frequent performer with Des Moines Metro Opera, Ms. Gartland premiered the role of Rose in A Thousand Acres with libretto by Mark Campbell and music composed by Kristin Kuster, as part of the company’s 50th Anniversary season in 2022, in what Opera Today called “a stunning turn,” following her success there as Lisa in Queen of Spades in 2021.
