Hailed as “a bass with an attitude and the goods to back it up,” by The New York Times and praised by the San Francisco Classical Voice for music that “harnesses considerable expressive power,” bass and composer Matt Boehler is known in the world of opera for his captivating, dynamic performances and his long-earned reputation as an inventive collaborative artist.
As a singer, Matt’s calendar over the past several years has included engagements at some of classical music’s most prestigious venues, including The Metropolitan Opera, Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie, Santa Fe Opera, and Canadian Opera Company. The 2022- 2023 sees his role debuts as Figaro in Madison Opera’s Le nozze di Figaro as well as performances of Beethoven’s 9th with Madison Symphony and Bernstein’s Mass with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. He also reprises his role of Van Helsing for the recording of The Lord of Cries (Corigliano/Adamo) with Boston Modern Orchestra Project.
As a composer, he has enjoyed several successful premieres of his work over the last season. His opera, Fat Pig, with a libretto by Miriam Gordon-Stewart based on Neil LaBute’s play, premiered at Victory Hall Opera and was lauded by Opera magazine as “impressive and captivating.” His recent song commissions from singers Sasha Cooke and David Portillo were praised by Opera News as "accomplished" and "fresh and vital." Portillo premiered Boehler’s work with Vocal Arts DC, and Cooke and recorded his work for her 2022 Grammy-nominated album how do I find you, released on the Pentatone label. Matt’s other recent commissioners include Washington National Opera, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, and the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine.
