Joseph Colaneri


Renowned for his versatility, musical depth, and ability to “inspire musicians," Joseph Colaneri is recognized as a multifaceted presence on the podium. An international conductor equally adept with operatic, oratorio and symphonic repertoire, Colaneri continues to expand his relationships with orchestras and opera companies both nationally and abroad. Music Director of the acclaimed Glimmerglass Festival since 2013, Joseph Colaneri has been a member of the Metropolitan conducting roster since 1998. Dedicated to the next generation of opera singers, Colaneri served as Artistic Director of Opera at the Mannes School of Music at The New School in New York City. During his tenure as Artistic Director of the West Australian Opera from 2012-2014 he led the company's mainstage productions and helped to revitalize their Young Artists Program by creating expanded study opportunities in New York City.


In the 2018-2019 season, Maestro Colaneri led a new production of Puccini’s La bohème at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in October and in November and December, he conducted the Metropolitan Opera's revival of Arrigo Boïto's Mefistofele. In January, he was in Baton Rouge to conduct a concert of opera highlights starring Met Opera artists Lisette Oropesa and Paul Groves; in April he returned to the Juilliard School in New York City to conduct their new production of Mozart's Don Giovanni, and in May he debuted at the Washington National Opera with a concert featuring their young artists and the WNO Orchestra. In the summer, Mo. Colaneri returned to The Glimmerglass Festival to lead Francesca Zambello's production of Verdi's La traviata and John Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles. Engagements for his 2019-2020 season include Aïda with San Diego Opera, The Ghosts of Versailles at l’Opéra Royal in Versailles, France, La bohème with Seattle Opera, and a return to The Glimmerglass Festival that includes The Sound of Music and Wagner’s Die Feen.
